Although many of his forms suggest weathered buoys and other nautical forms, Hamada takes more inspiration from music than literal sources in the everyday world. Hamada moved from his native Tokyo to West Virginia at the age of 18, when his father took a job in the steel industry. Entering college, his struggle to communicate in English and to comprehend his newfound minority status catalyzed his profound response to the abstract fundamentals of drawing and sculpture - the universal language of geometry and design. He went on to receive his MFA from the University of Maryland and was subsequently awarded two residencies from the Edward Albee Foundation. His List Gallery show was his first in the Greater Philadelphia region.

<itunes:summary>Performance artist Na Tanyaacute; Davinaacute; Stewart delivered her distinctive style of emotionally and intellectually charged spoken word as part of the inaugural Kathryn Morgan Spring Poetry Fest. She closed her performance with "Sister Space."

Davinaacute; shared the stage with Eva McKend '11, an English literature major from New York, N.Y., who performed her piece, "Between Love and Hate." Eva was accompanied on piano by Philippe Celestin '11.

Both performances helped celebrate the life and work of Kathryn Morgan, Sara Lawrence Lightfoot Professor Emerita of History. Morgan, who attended the festival's kickoff event, was the first African American professor at the College and the first African American woman to be granted tenure.</itunes:summary>

Associate Professor of Music John Alston created a community of strivers and seekers in the Chester Children's Chorus, which he founded with seven boys in 1994. Now with more than 100 boys and girls of all ages that enjoy a summer learning program that includes science taught by College faculty members, African dance and drumming, and a reading program, the chorus makes far more than a joyous sound.

"While I hope that most of them will remain music-lovers and some of them will embrace classical music, what I really dream about for these kids is that they can go out and change the world," Alston says. "And that's the truth."

Alston's efforts to expand upon the successful model of the chorus culminated last fall with the opening of the Chester Upland School of the Arts. Students there, currently in pre-K to second grade, are immersed in a curriculum that combines rigorous academics with music, dance, and visual arts.

The chorus will celebrate its 15-year anniversary with concerts on May 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. in Lang Concert Hall.

The two, lab partners in Professor of Engineering Erik Cheever's Engineering Methodology course, made improvements to the existing arm and wrote controlling software for it. "We used Processing to write a friendly GUI that allows the user to either draw with the mouse or import SVG path data from a file," Ames says. "The software then traces the paths and sends the angles to the servos of the robotic arm."

Ames made a time-lapse video of the arm, since the actual drawing took a little over a half hour to complete.
